THE STORIES OF YOKOHAMA
The Story of Yokohama
When Yokohama opened its port in 1859, the city became one of Japan’s principal gateways to the world. Western culture and technology blended with Japanese traditions, creating a distinctive modern urban culture that continues to define Yokohama today.

Yokohama Geisha
As Yokohama developed after the port opened, ryotei restaurants and social venues welcomed distinguished guests from Japan and overseas. Yokohama Geisha became part of this hospitality culture, and their dance, music and graceful service remain a living expression of the city’s history.

Yokohama & Silk
Yokohama was once known worldwide as a major raw-silk export port. The prosperity generated by silk supported Japan’s modernization and shaped the city’s industries, culture and streetscape—an important heritage that remains part of Yokohama’s identity.
